The benefits of Compression Therapy are plentiful and the reasons vary from person to person why you may choose to wear compression socks or stockings. As shown in the above chart, some of the most prevalent symptoms or conditions that benefit from compression therapy are:
Pregnancy related swelling and vein problems
Varicose or spider veins
Lymphedema or edema
Swelling, pain or blood clots in the lower legs, also known as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
Poor circulation from sitting for long periods
Post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment
It can even be used as a preventive measure to maintain healthy legs for someone who spends extensive amounts of time on their feet. Quite simply, when we stand still for long periods, the forces of gravity increase the pressure within the veins of the legs where the greater effects happen at the ankle and decreases gradually up the leg and body. This pressure depends on the vertical distance of the column of blood from the heart to the foot. That's why gradient compression stockings are designed with the pressure greatest at the ankle and diminishing as it moves up the leg in order to counter the effects of the higher venous pressures.
Compression therapy products are put on in the morning upon arising, which is typically before any significant swelling would occur, and then removed at night. Throughout the day the compression prevents blood from pooling in leg veins, which in turn helps your overall circulation and lessens or eliminates any leg swelling you may have.
When shopping for compression socks or stockings, it is best to measure earlier in the day before swelling builds in the legs. Measurements taken later in the day after swelling occurs may cause you to choose an item that is too large and then not effective.
There are many types of compression socks and stockings available without a prescription and they do offer wide-ranging benefits. Before wearing a compression therapy of 20 mmHg (Firm Compression) and above, it is generally recommended to consult your health care provider to find out if graduated compression stockings are right for you. If the answer is yes, they can tell you what pressure grade you should buy for maximum benefit and relief.

My husband has lymphedema in his legs from lymph node removal during cancer surgery. He wears thigh high 20-30mmHg with silicone band. We have tried several brands, but Sigvaris are his favorite. They are not as "stiff" as some brands and the silicone band is the stickiest - these do not slip down.

Sigvaris is the best stockings we have purchased. They come in three different lengths and four leg circumferences.

I have tried multiple brands of thigh-high compression stockings. My biggest problem has been keeping them from sliding down, sometimes to my knees, during the day. I have tried the most expensive, with the silicone dots, and had the same problem. I then purchased the "It Stays" adhesive roll-on and it did a pretty good job of keeping them in place. However the roll-on adhesive, using it daily, was uncomfortable and began to irritate my skin. I noticed this more when there was more "stretch" in the stockings.
I then bought a pair of the Sigvaris 822N Midtown Microfiber 20-30 mmHg Closed Toe Thigh High Compression Stockings for Men with Silicone Border. The silicone border, without any dots, is a 2-inch wide, flat border that has excellent holding properties. I wear these daily and they don't slide down with normal activity. The only time that they stayed up was when I was actually running through the woods with my dogs! I have since bought 3 more pair.
The only negative, and it is not a small one considering the price, is of the 4 pair that I own, I have a few horizontal "runs/snags" in 3 pair. I am very careful putting them on, using ALPS 100% Silicone Fitting Lotion, donning gloves and a grip mat. I have never noticed anytime that I "snagged" them, but it happened.
However, these "snags/runs" does not appear to affect their performance. I plan on continuing to purchase these. They fit and feel great and are easy to put on. I would hope that they could improve on the durability while maintaining all of the positive features.

Love these stockings, love the fabric and the way it stays in place on my legs. The gripping strip at the top is wide and true for performance.
The foot section is a smidgen too big, for my feet, but easily adjustable
I have tried two other brands' for less money and they were very inferior in all ways a waste of time and money. You get want you pay for , is so true.
Sigvaris are more expensive, however, well worth the money. Barbara
