Compression stockings are medical grade devices designed to move blood flow.Â
Support compression stockings are made available in multiple compression support levels. Most commonly compression support stockings come in mild (8-15 mmHg), Medium (15-20 mmHg), Firm (20-30 mmHg), X-Firm (30-40 mmHg) gradient compression levels.

40-50 mmHg Gradient Compression Stockings are generally indicated for more Serious Venous Diseases such as Acute Leg/Ankle Swelling, Varicose Veins, Chronic Vein Insufficiency and Deep Vein Thrombosis.
The benefits of Compression Therapy are plentiful and the reasons vary from person to person why you may choose to wear compression socks or stockings. As shown in the above chart, some of the most prevalent symptoms or conditions that benefit from compression therapy are:
Pregnancy related swelling and vein problems
Varicose or spider veins
Lymphedema or edema
Swelling, pain or blood clots in the lower legs, also known as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
Poor circulation from sitting for long periods
Post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment
It can even be used as a preventive measure to maintain healthy legs for someone who spends extensive amounts of time on their feet. Quite simply, when we stand still for long periods, the forces of gravity increase the pressure within the veins of the legs where the greater effects happen at the ankle and decreases gradually up the leg and body. This pressure depends on the vertical distance of the column of blood from the heart to the foot. That's why gradient compression stockings are designed with the pressure greatest at the ankle and diminishing as it moves up the leg in order to counter the effects of the higher venous pressures.
Compression therapy products are put on in the morning upon arising, which is typically before any significant swelling would occur, and then removed at night. Throughout the day the compression prevents blood from pooling in leg veins, which in turn helps your overall circulation and lessens or eliminates any leg swelling you may have.
When shopping for compression socks or stockings, it is best to measure earlier in the day before swelling builds in the legs. Measurements taken later in the day after swelling occurs may cause you to choose an item that is too large and then not effective.
There are many types of compression socks and stockings available without a prescription and they do offer wide-ranging benefits. Before wearing a compression therapy of 20 mmHg (Firm Compression) and above, it is generally recommended to consult your health care provider to find out if graduated compression stockings are right for you. If the answer is yes, they can tell you what pressure grade you should buy for maximum benefit and relief.
COMPRESSION SOCKS HAVE BEEN MEDICALLY NECESSARY FOR ME FOR SEVERAL YEARS. NEEDED TO REPLACE WHAT I HAD BEEN USING SATISFACTORY FOR A LONG TIME BUT I COULDN'T REMEMBER WHERE I HAD ORDERED THEM - BUMMER. ORDERED A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT TYPES BUT NON HAD GOOD CONTROL FOR EDEMA AT ANKLES.
FINALLY DECIDED TO ORDER A PAIR OF SIGVARIS KNEE HI'S BUT HAD NEVER TRIED THAT BRAND. I WAS A BIT SKEPTICAL BUT BECAME IMPRESSED QUICKLY. THEY GET THE JOB DONE AND ARE MUCH EASIER TO PUT ON THAN WHAT I HAD BEEN USING FOR SEVERAL YEARS. I ORDERED THREE MORE PAIRS. I HAVE BEEN USING THEM DAILY FOR ABOUT A MONTH OR TWO (?) AND THEY ARE WORKING WELL.. I AM 73 AND HAVE A BIT OF ARTHRITIS IN MY HANDS BUT THESE SIGVARIS WORK NICELY. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE FINE SPIDER VEINS IN MY LEGS HAVE BECOME LIGHTER IN COLOR AND SMALLER IN SIZE. REALLY AM IMPRESSED. IF YOU HAVE ANY HESITATION JUST TRY A PAIR.

Since support hose are a forever thing for me, I stay as far away from latex as possible. Sigvaris cotton works for me.

the cotton feels nice on my skin, it's not too hot in summer. the silicone border is wonderful. i have the same ones without the silicone border- and everything else i get without a silicone border- that roll down or stretch and i keep having to readjust them. these are on and good for the day. the only reason it's 4 and not 5 stars is that they don't come in a natural color (my skin is not near the color of "crispa" what the heck is "crispa" anyway?) so i can't wear the open toe ones with sandals, and that the silicone border only is available on crispa and black

I have been pleased with the Sigvaris brand, especially the band at the top of the knee highs that keep them from rolling over or sliding down. My previous pair was black, non-cotton, size MS. I thought I might be sensitive to the dye, the fabric, and/or was over heating because I was developing an itchy rash on my shins when I wore them. Thus, I tried these cotton blend ones in Crispa in the same size. There really isn't much cotton in these, only 25% but they do seem to breathe better. The two pair I ordered are a little short on me though. I surmise that I am on the edge of the size break but for cotton ones, I should order the next size taller. These actually slide down my legs as the day progresses.

For years I have been using Juzo compression hose. Watched an episode of How its Made about the Sigvaris hose and I thought I would give them a try. Great fit well made but not as heavy duty as my Juzo hose. After just one day of wear, the tops rolled up and left a deep circle on my legs, and the open toes also shifted. Gave them a week trial and was not pleased with their performance, so I am back to my Juzo hose.
