40-50 mmHg Gradient Compression Stockings are generally indicated for more Serious Venous Diseases such as Acute Leg/Ankle Swelling, Varicose Veins, Chronic Vein Insufficiency and Deep Vein Thrombosis.
The benefits of Compression Therapy are plentiful and the reasons vary from person to person why you may choose to wear compression socks or stockings. As shown in the above chart, some of the most prevalent symptoms or conditions that benefit from compression therapy are:
Pregnancy related swelling and vein problems
Varicose or spider veins
Lymphedema or edema
Swelling, pain or blood clots in the lower legs, also known as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
Poor circulation from sitting for long periods
Post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment
It can even be used as a preventive measure to maintain healthy legs for someone who spends extensive amounts of time on their feet. Quite simply, when we stand still for long periods, the forces of gravity increase the pressure within the veins of the legs where the greater effects happen at the ankle and decreases gradually up the leg and body. This pressure depends on the vertical distance of the column of blood from the heart to the foot. That's why gradient compression stockings are designed with the pressure greatest at the ankle and diminishing as it moves up the leg in order to counter the effects of the higher venous pressures.
Compression therapy products are put on in the morning upon arising, which is typically before any significant swelling would occur, and then removed at night. Throughout the day the compression prevents blood from pooling in leg veins, which in turn helps your overall circulation and lessens or eliminates any leg swelling you may have.
When shopping for compression socks or stockings, it is best to measure earlier in the day before swelling builds in the legs. Measurements taken later in the day after swelling occurs may cause you to choose an item that is too large and then not effective.
There are many types of compression socks and stockings available without a prescription and they do offer wide-ranging benefits. Before wearing a compression therapy of 20 mmHg (Firm Compression) and above, it is generally recommended to consult your health care provider to find out if graduated compression stockings are right for you. If the answer is yes, they can tell you what pressure grade you should buy for maximum benefit and relief.

I buy the open toed support hose for myself, so when my husband asked about getting him some to wear I ordered him what I buy except with a closed toe. He is very happy with the feel and support of the hose. I have not heard one complaint from him. In fact, I bought him five paris to start off and a few weeks later bought him six more pairs. These can be washed in the washing machine and dried which makes them really easy to care for.

I have deep vein insufficiency & these open-toed compression hose offer comfort, support & allow my toes to be exposed for our hot summers.
Could I suggest some kind of top edge that keeps the slippery sock up on calf?

I have been wearing this brand and model for quite a while when I realized that they needed to be replaced. I wash them in the washing machine and put them in the dryer on medium and have not had any trouble with them. They do not run and are not terribly hard to put on. I also bought some for my husband as he is on his feet a lot and he is very happy with his. I buy the open toe and he gets the closed toe.

I have been a very loyal customer of Discount Surgical for around 8 years and they have always been loyal to me, too. I signed on for a regular delivery of my stockings maybe 4 years ago and while there have been a few "glitches" in the schedule, they were mostly my "fault. Since the plan relies on a credit/debit card number on file, the three times our account was hacked over the years created some short term confusion and I didn't always do the best job making things right. But, Discount Surgical always, always smoothed the way and assisted me through the stress of it all. (Of course, there were quite a number of other accounts I had for automatic payment plans that were messed up at the same time! ) This last time it happened I got confused all over again with them, thinking I hadn't dealt with them yet, thus getting their extremely accommodating staff to to hold my foolish hand through to a peaceful end. In a world where customer service is becoming a lost art, this company and the people they keep working for them are really outstanding. I can't praise them enough!
I also learned of the Medi brand of stockings that are now made in microfiber through them and they are wonderful. I simply toss them into a mesh, zippered bag and wash them in an unscented, natural laundry detergent on the "knits" setting and line dry them and I get really good covering my zappy feet. support and a smooth texture. Thank you Discount Surgical for carrying this line because they really did improved my quality of life from the first time i wore them until now. And, as if by magic, when I toss an old pair into my gardening basket, as if by magic a new pair magically appears in my mailbox. I wish Discount Surgical had a grocery shopping and delivery service ; ) --Happy and Content in Bellevue

These wear well. I usually wear the navy or black. After all these years of wearing them, it is just what I do. I rarely go without them. I do not find them annoying. If I have eaten salty things, been sitting too long (as in car travel) they sometimes will cut into my leg, like having a rubber band there. Not particularly the fault of the stockings. By elevating my legs for a while, that usually solves the problem.
