Compression

Compression stockings are medical grade devices designed to move blood flow.

Support compression stockings are made available in multiple compression support levels. Most commonly compression support stockings come in mild (8-15 mmHg), Medium (15-20 mmHg), Firm (20-30 mmHg), X-Firm (30-40 mmHg) gradient compression levels.

  • Helps relieve minor swelling of feet, ankles, and legs.
  • During pregnancy, helps prevent the formation of varicose and spider veins.

First Time Wearing Compression Stockings? We recommend you start with 15-20mmHg

RX 40-50 mmHg Gradient Compression Stockings are generally indicated for more Serious Venous Diseases such as Acute Leg/Ankle Swelling, Varicose Veins, Chronic Vein Insufficiency and Deep Vein Thrombosis.

The benefits of Compression Therapy are plentiful and the reasons vary from person to person why you may choose to wear compression socks or stockings. As shown in the above chart, some of the most prevalent symptoms or conditions that benefit from compression therapy are:

  • Pregnancy related swelling and vein problems
  • Varicose or spider veins
  • Lymphedema or edema
  • Swelling, pain or blood clots in the lower legs, also known as DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Poor circulation from sitting for long periods
  • Post-surgical and post-sclerotherapy treatment

It can even be used as a preventive measure to maintain healthy legs for someone who spends extensive amounts of time on their feet. Quite simply, when we stand still for long periods, the forces of gravity increase the pressure within the veins of the legs where the greater effects happen at the ankle and decreases gradually up the leg and body. This pressure depends on the vertical distance of the column of blood from the heart to the foot. That's why gradient compression stockings are designed with the pressure greatest at the ankle and diminishing as it moves up the leg in order to counter the effects of the higher venous pressures.

Compression therapy products are put on in the morning upon arising, which is typically before any significant swelling would occur, and then removed at night. Throughout the day the compression prevents blood from pooling in leg veins, which in turn helps your overall circulation and lessens or eliminates any leg swelling you may have.

When shopping for compression socks or stockings, it is best to measure earlier in the day before swelling builds in the legs. Measurements taken later in the day after swelling occurs may cause you to choose an item that is too large and then not effective.

There are many types of compression socks and stockings available without a prescription and they do offer wide-ranging benefits. Before wearing a compression therapy of 20 mmHg (Firm Compression) and above, it is generally recommended to consult your health care provider to find out if graduated compression stockings are right for you. If the answer is yes, they can tell you what pressure grade you should buy for maximum benefit and relief.

They do their Job 0 people found this helpful

The 20-30 Jobst UltraSheer pantyhose is hard to beat in terms of durability and performance: they really do their job in terms of "supporting" your legs and preventing pain and swelling. I feel like my legs are being contained and massaged. My only complaints are: a) the price (ouch!); b) they are a bit too tight in the belly area, and c) they are not extremely "dressy" to wear under skirts or dresses. For that purpose, I prefer the MediVen Sheer & Soft, natural color, pantyhose.
In terms of colors, I love the Anthracite shade of Jobst Ultrasheer to wear under black skirts: it's nicer that the Black color. If your skin, like mine, is not too pale, then the Natural color might be too light; Honey is better . I don't like the "Suntan" color: it´s more like a grayish, taupe shade.

Great but TOO tight on my belly 0 people found this helpful
    Overall

I have been wearing compression hoses everyday for almost one year now, after I had varicose vein-surgery and my surgeon recommended the Jobst brand. I have also tried Midi, and what I can say about Jobst ultraSheer is that they are of excellent quality, strong and more durable than Midi (Midi Sheer & Soft look better and feel softer on my legs, and the natural color is nicer than Jobst's, but I have already torn 3 pairs, so becareful when putting them on! I keep a Midi pair for special occasions, to wear with a skirt or dress). I rely more on Jobst ultraSheer than Midi Sheer & Soft for my everyday life. However, I fully share Lisa´s comment on Jobst: they are way too tight at the belly. As Lisa said: "If anyone's even paying attention to these reviews, I'd ask them to make compression stockings with a wider waist band and a bit looser! They're WAY TOO TIGHT! My problem is in my legs, not my gut!" (You won't have this problem with Midi, because the waistband is looser, but the fabric is more delicate, so be extra careful and treat them gently!). I definitely recommend Jobst's ultraSheer pantyhose. It's not cheap, but it's worth the price. I only wish they would make them a little looser at the panty level.

expensive but good 0 people found this helpful

Jobst has a good product. I paid the price for the 'good ones' and that's what i got!
The fabric is strong, yet i'm able to put them on without the help of heavy equipment! ha ha
my only complaint of these and other compression stockings is the waist band. they're SO tight!
some of them bruise my ribs when i first wear them. If anyone's even paying attention to these reviews, i'd ask them to make compression stockings with a wider waist band and a bit looser! they're WAY TOO TIGHT!
my problem is in my legs, not my gut! and who wants to walk around with a big 'dig' in their side. not very becoming. After wearing them all day, my stomach becomes uncomfortable and i end up folding the waist down over my jeans. (which forces me to wear longer shirts and adjust my wardrobe)
